February 21st - and some went to the ruins
While the five of us were off on our nature adventure...Stanley, Doug and Ann all took a step back in time. The ancient Maya ruins of Cahal Pech near San Ignacio are serene, shaded and uncrowded. We tried to imagine that it was once a bustling city of 10, 000 with many palaces cut from limestone blocks; markets trading in jade, salt and feathers; artists carving figurines and whistles. Settled around 1200 B.C., the site was abandoned in the 9th century. The Maya themselves are resilient, and thousands still live in Belize today.
